The tablao in numbers
What the room holds
The tablao opened in 1960 in the premises of La Taberna Gitana, a venue that dated from 1949. Camarón de la Isla worked this stage for twelve years and met the guitarist Paco de Lucía here, and many artists call the room the Cathedral of Flamenco.
The interior recalls the Torres Bermejas of the Alhambra, with Arab-style motifs, tiles and coffered wooden ceilings. The real towers stand in Granada. This room is a Madrid recreation, built as a setting for flamenco.
A cuadro of singers, guitarists, clappers and dancers performs without microphones in a small room, so the sound of a heel on the boards reaches you directly. Guests describe an intimate, atmospheric evening.

Six moments in the hour
The cuadro chooses the order on the night. These six moments follow the styles named for the room, from the first guitar chord to the closing number.
Pass through the door on Calle de Mesonero Romanos into a space of Arab-style motifs, tiles and carved wooden ceilings, and find your seat before the cuadro begins.
Singers, guitarists, clappers and dancers settle on the raised stage. There are no microphones, so the first chord and the first call of the voice reach the room directly.
A serious, intimate song in a 12-beat cycle. Listen for the solemn tone, and for how the dancer answers the guitar.
Among the most intensely expressive forms, rooted in the Gitano tradition. The tempo bends for dramatic effect, so watch the pauses.
The programme also draws on Spanish classical dance and on martinete, so the hour widens beyond the styles above.
A fast 12-beat cycle that often ends a flamenco gathering, with intricate footwork and room for improvisation.
The programme changes through the season, so your evening may carry a different mix. Your confirmation shows the session time for your date.
